UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Five Spiders of the Richmond field hockey team have earned 2013 VaSID University Division All-State Field Hockey honors, announced by the Virginia Sports Information Directors Monday.
Junior Rebecca Barry, sophomore Amy Cooke and senior Anna Zarkoski were selected to the First Team, while senior Chelsea Davies and sophomore Samantha Ostoich were placed on the Second Team.
“Having five players make the VaSID All-State field hockey team puts a final stamp on a successful season,” commented Richmond head coach Gina Lucido. “Virginia is a state filled with elite-level players and nationally prominent programs, to be counted among the best is praiseworthy.”
This marks the first year since the 2006 season that five Spiders received All-State honors.
Barry, a three-time VaSID First Team selection, has been racking in the awards this season as she was also placed on the NFHCA All-America Second-Team, NFHCA First-Team All-South Region, First Team All-Atlantic 10 and All-Tournament teams. She led team with 16 goals, eight assists, and four game-winners and finished the season ranked tied for 18th in the nation in goals per game.
Cooke was a standout on defense in her second season as a Spider, helping lead a unit that held opponents to 0.09 goals per game. This is her third honor of the season as she was placed on the First Team All-Atlantic 10 and earned NFHCA First-Team All-South Region honors.
Zarkoski, a three-time VaSID selection, concluded a stellar Richmond career between the pipes. The senior goalkeeper is the first ever Spider to be placed on the All-America First Team. This season she recorded 84 saves, seven shutouts and a .824 save percentage that ranks first in the nation. Zarkoski was also placed on the NFHCA First-Team All-South Region and First-Team All-Atlantic 10.
This is Davies third honor of the season as she was also placed on the First-Team All-Atlantic 10 and NFHCA Second-Team All-South Region. The senior finished the season with four goals, nine assists and 17 points to clinch her second VaSID honor of her career.
This is the first All-State honor for Ostoich, as she was also placed on the First Team All-Atlantic 10 this season. The sophomore was crucial in the midfield for the Spiders and finished the season with five goals and three assists with one game-winner.
“I am especially proud of my former assistant coach and Spider alum Jodi Murphy for being named with Coach of the Year honors,” added Lucido.
Murphy played two seasons with the Spiders after transferring from Indiana in before the 2005 season. She helped guide Richmond to back-to-back Atlantic 10 titles and trips to the NCAA Tournament. In just her third season at Liberty, Murphy led the Flames to their second-straight NorPac East title and their first ever NCAA appearance as they finished 17-5 overall and 8-0 in the NorPac.
