LONG BEACH, Calif. – The Richmond women's basketball team fell in a heartbreaker to the Pacific Tigers, 59-57, Saturday in the consolation game of the Long Beach Classic afternoon at the Walter Pyramid.
A trey from freshman Olivia Healy gave the Spiders a two-point lead, 57-55, with 1:34 to play, before two free throws and a layup at the last second gave the Tigers the two-point victory.
Healy paced the Richmond (5-7) with a game-high 20 points and career-high 12 rebounds to be named to the All-Tournament team, while redshirt junior Genevieve Okoro added 13 points in just 12 minutes played. Pacific (5-5) saw three Tigers in double figures.
Richmond crashed the boards to outrebound Pacific, 51-42, thanks to 23 offensive rebounds that allowed 20 second-chance points. The Spiders held a team that has been shooting 42.6 percent on the season, to just 36.4 percent, and caused 19 turnovers.
The Spiders came out hot in the first half, as they held the Tigers scoreless for the first six and a half minutes. Richmond gained a 17-point lead before Pacific notched its first points of the contest at the 13:27 mark.
The Tigers went on a 16-7 run to make up for their deficit and eventually go into halftime with a three-point lead, 32-29.
Richmond battled in the second half and was only outscored by one in the final 20 minutes. Okoro, who suffered from early foul trouble, notched 10 of her 13 points in a second period that consisted of three ties and four lead changes.
The Spiders will return home for Christmas, before hitting the court Saturday, Dec. 28 in Davidson, N.C., to take on the Davidson Wildcats at 2 p.m.
