LEXINGTON, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team dropped a road game at VMI on Wednesday afternoon, 9-5, at Gray-Minor Stadium in Lexington.
With the setback, Richmond's record falls to 14-6 on the season, while VMI improves to 9-14 on the year.
Junior Adam Forrer and freshman Tyler Beckwith led the Spiders offense on Wednesday at VMI. Forrer went 2-for-4 with a RBI triple, while Beckwith went 3-for-4 on the day with a double and a RBI. Senior Chris Bell also drove in a run for the Spiders.
On a staff day, sophomores RHP James Lively, sophomore LHP Chris Bates and freshman RHP Dan Martinson all tossed scoreless innings, while classmate Zach Grossfeld threw 1.1 shutout frames.
In the top of the first, the Spiders jumped on the board early with a pair of runs. After Bell reached on an error to open the game, he was brought home on a RBI triple from Adam Forrer that banged off the wall in right-center field. Forrer later scored on a wild pitch, making the Spider advantage 2-0 after the first.
Richmond played add-on in the second, pushing its lead to 4-0. After double from Corey Moheit, the junior catcher scored on a RBI double from Beckwith. Two batters later, Beckwith showed great base-running ability, scoring from second on an infield single off the bat of Bell.
VMI's offense came alive in the third inning, however, as the Keydets plated three runs in the frame. VMI then scored four in the fourth inning to take a lead it would not surrender. The Keydets earned a spilt of the two-game season series with a 9-5 win on Wednesday.
The Richmond Spiders will return home to Pitt Field this weekend to open Atlantic 10 conference play with a three game series against Charlotte. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
