Richmond Plays GW Friday In A-10 Tournament

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Ninth-seeded Richmond squares off against No. 8 seed GW Friday at 11:30 a.m. in the first round of the 2013 A-10 Tournament.
Richmond Lately
Richmond battled Charlotte to the end, but fell 64-55 on senior day
Sunday. Becca Wann had 14 points, while Rachael Bilney added 13. The loss
snapped Richmond's four-game win streak as it ended its home slate at 9-5 at
the Robins Center. The Spiders are led by King's 13.1 ppg, with Bilney
following at 11.6 ppg. Becca Wann comes off the bench to contribute 10.6 ppg
and leads the team with 89 assists. Liz Brown's 48 blocks this season rank
second in a single-season in the Spider record books. The Spiders are shooting
40 percent from the field and 31 percent from long range. Richmond has made 74
percent of its free-throws. Richmond ended its regular season at 16-14 on the
season and 6-8 in the A-10 standings.
Scouting GW
George Washington finished its regular season with a 13-15 record, 7-7
in A-10 play. The Colonials have won two of their last three games. GW most
recently beat Saint Louis, 68-55, Mar. 3 at the Smith Center. Danni Jackson
leads Colonial scoring at 10.2 ppg, with Megan Nipe following at 10.1 ppg. In
A-10 games only, Shi-Heria Shipp is averaging 10.0 ppg. GW is shooting 40
percent from the field, 34 percent from long range. The Colonials are
outrebounding opponents by +5.7 rebounds a game and average 9.6 steals a game.
GW is 2-5 in away games this season and is 0-0 in neutral site games this year.
The Last Time The Two Teams Met
Plenty of drama surrounded the last time these two teams met, as GW
scored four points in the last 10 seconds to stun the Spiders, 57-54, Feb. 6 at
the Smith Center. Kristina King and Becca Wann had 11 points for Richmond. The
Spiders hit 37 percent of its shots in the game and had 10 steals. GW holds a
20-13 all-time edge in the series with the Spiders. GW's win over the Spiders
this season snapped a eight-game losing streak in the series and won its first
game over the Spiders since 2008.
Spiders In The A-10 Tournament
Richmond looks for its first win in the A-10 Tournament since 2010. The
Spiders have received a bye in the Tournament three of the last four years. The
last time the Spiders played in a first round game, they defeated UMass, 54-47,
in 2010. Richmond dropped last year's quarterfinal game to the St. Joseph's,
69-57, at Hagan Arena. Richmond brings a 9-11 all-time mark into the A-10
Tournament and looks for its first win over GW in the postseason. The Spiders
are 0-2 all-time against GW in the A-10 Tournament. The two teams last battled
each other in 2006 in the quarterfinal round. This will be the first meeting
between the two teams in the first round.
