PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Richmond rallied to tie George Washington in the closing minutes, but fell 59-53, in the first round of the A-10 Tournament in Philly.
The Spiders used a 6-0 run to give the game its first tie at 51-all with 5:55 to go, but GW outscored Richmond 8-2 in the game's final minutes to take the win. Richmond missed seven shots and went without a field goal in the last four minutes, until Kristina King broke the draught with a layup with 30 seconds left to cut the deficit to 56-53.
Richmond could not find its rhythm offensively, shooting 9-for-30 (30%) in the second half, after going 9-of-34 (26.5%) in the first frame.
Richmond started the game 1-of-10 from the field to fall behind 15-2. But the Spiders pieced together scoring spurts to get to within a 30-24 halftime deficit.
Becca Wann was a marvel in the first frame, at one point being responsible for 10 of Richmond's 15 points, and finished with 13 first-half points.
Wann ended with a game-high 17 points and 12 rebounds for her 10th career double-double, fifth this season. King followed with 16 points, with 14 of those points coming in the second half. Ryann Dannelly was just shy of a double-double with eight points and nine rebounds.
Richmond outrebounded GW, 41-39, and made 13-of-15 foul shots.
GW ended the game shooting 22-of-50 (44%) from the field, led by Danni Jackson's 13 points.
The Spiders await their postseason fate, to be decided March 18 as announced by the Women's National Invitation Tournament.
