PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Sam Stevenson scored a season-high six goals as Richmond edged Temple, 16-15, Sunday in Philadelphia.
Richmond won three-straight to close the season as it ended with a 7-10, 4-3 overall record. Three teams finished A-10 play with 4-3 marks, but by virtue of a head-to-head tiebreaker, the Spiders did not qualify for the tournament.
“I'm proud of the way we finished the season,” said head coach Allison Evans. We started the game strong and responded well when Temple went on their runs. Sam [Stevenson] and Bailey [Zerr]'s control of the draw today was incredible and helped us maintain momentum. All in all, it was a great team effort against a strong Temple team.”
Richmond opened the game with the contest's first three goals, with redshirt senior Caitlin Fifield accounting for two of those three goals. After Temple countered with three tallies, Richmond burst ahead with five-straight goals to take a 8-3 lead with 15 minutes left in the first half. Temple would again respond to score six unanswered goals to take its only lead of the game at 9-8.
Richmond closed the half with three-straight pivotal goals to extend its lead to 11-9 at the break. In the second frame, Richmond opened its largest lead at 15-12 with 8:19 remaining in the game, but Temple hung around to keep the deficit to only a goal in the closing minutes. Richmond controlled the draw in the last minute and held onto possession for the win.
Stevenson and Fifield led Richmond with seven points apiece. Stevenson scored six goals and had one assist, while Fifield followed with five goals and two assists. Bailey Zerr added two goals.
Zerr secured a game-high nine draw controls, while Stevenson grabbed seven draws. Not surprisingly, Richmond dominated the draw at 21-12.
Stevenson and Fifield end their careers with some of the most impressive numbers in Richmond lacrosse history. The Tewaaraton Watch List nominee Fifield finished fourth all-time in goals (174), seventh in assists (55) and third in total points (229).
Not to be outdone, Stevenson finished fifth all-time in goals (152), eighth in assists (46) and fifth in total points (198). Classmate Kara Moschetti finished ninth all-time in assists (43) and 10th in total points (140).
