Richmond Drops Series Finale To Saint Louis, 2-0
04/28/2013 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team dropped the series finale to the Saint Louis Billikens on Sunday afternoon, 2-0, at Pitt Field.
With the setback, Richmond's overall record falls to 26-16 and to 9-6 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the win, Saint Louis improves to 30-13 on the year and to 12-3 in league action.
Despite the setback, Richmond has now won two-of-three from both first-place Saint Louis and second-place La Salle. The Spiders are the only team in the Atlantic 10 to have won series against both the Billikens and the Explorers.
Senior RHP Jacob Mayers (2-1) pitched very well despite taking the loss on Sunday, tossing eight strong innings. Mayers struck out seven batters while not issuing a walk, allowing just two runs on seven hits.
Offensively, the Spiders were stymied by Saint Louis starter Clay Smith, who tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout. Recording the two hits for Richmond were junior Mike Small – who broke up the no-hit bid with one out in the eighth – and senior Bret Williams.
The Richmond Spiders will be back in action on Friday, when the team begins a three-game, Atlantic 10 series with the Temple Owls at Pitt Field. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
