Richmond's Walker Advances To NCAA Championship
05/18/2013 | Men's Golf
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – University of Richmond Spiders senior men's golfer Daniel Walker advanced to the NCAA Championship as an individual after tying for second place at the NCAA Regional in Tallahassee, Florida on Saturday.
"It's hard to explain how difficult it is for an individual to advance to the NCAA Finals. Daniel played three of the best rounds of golf in school history," Richmond head coach Adam Decker said. "He stayed extremely patient all week and had outstanding command of his game. He hit a lot of greens and was around the hole all day. He had no three putts for the tournament and saved par at several key points throughout the event."
Walker had one of the finest tournaments of his career this weekend in Tallahassee, carding a three-round total of 204 (-12) to tie for second place. Walker advances to the NCAA Championship as the top individual on a team who did not advance at the regional.
After shooting a first round score of 68 (-4) on Thursday, the senior from Earlysville, Virginia totaled a 67 (-5) on Friday. Then in the final round on Saturday, Walker punched his ticket to the championship with a final round score of 69 (-3).
Walker made his move on the back nine on Saturday, carding three-consecutive birdies on Nos. 13,14 and 15. For the three-round regional, Walkers totaled one eagle, an impressive 13 birdies and just five bogeys over 54 holes.
The 2013 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship will be held in Atlanta at the Capital City Club Crabapple Course on May 28 through June 2.
