CHARLOTTE, N.C. – After outstanding season and helping lead the University of Richmond Spiders baseball team to the conference tournament, senior Jacob Mayers and freshman Tanner Stanley earned All-Atlantic 10 honors on Tuesday.
Stanley was named the Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-Atlantic 10, while Mayers was named First-Team All A-10 as a DH for the second-straight season.
“We couldn't be more proud of both Jacob and Tanner for the seasons they had for us,” coach Charlie Goens said. “It's an honor not only for them but for the team as a whole. Hopefully, this is just the start of a great week.”
Stanley made an immediate impact for the Spiders in 2013, being the only player to start all 52 games for Richmond this season. Offensively, Stanley was third on the team with a .321 batting average and led the team with 17 doubles and 38 RBI. Stanley led all Atlantic 10 freshmen in doubles, RBI and runs scored (42) and ranked third overall in the league in doubles.
A standout defensively as well, Stanley was a force in right field for the Spiders, making only one error all year while totaling seven assists. The Maitland, Fla. native was the only freshman to make either of the A-10's all-conference teams. Stanley's Rookie of the Year honor makes it a repeat for Richmond, as LHP Zak Sterling was named the league's most outstanding freshman last season.
After a stellar junior campaign, Mayers rounded out his outstanding career for the Spiders with a fantastic senior season. Mayers led the Spiders in batting average (.367), hits (72), and home runs (7). In the A-10, the Mechanicsville, Va. native was second in home runs, slugging percentage (.546) and total bases (107).
Mayers has been a constant in the No. 3 spot in the Richmond lineup all year. Mayers had 24 multi-hit games during the season, including seven three-hit games. The senior also had 11 multi-RBI contests, including three games with three runs driven in.
The Richmond Spiders baseball team will begin its journey toward a conference title on Wednesday at the Atlantic 10 Tournament. The No. 7-seeded Spiders will face the No. 2-seeded Charlotte 49ers at 1:30 p.m.
