AVON, Colo. – University of Richmond sophomore Jordan Chavez of the men's cross country program won the 2013 XTERRRA Beaver Creek Trail 10k at the Beaver Creek Resort in Avon, Colo.
Chavez, a member of the Junior U.S. Mountain Running Team, took an early lead on 2004 Olympian Roberto Mandje and never looked back taking the tape in 36:23 – a 5:52 per mile pace. Mandje clocked in at the 37:54 mark, 1:31 behind Chavez.
“It was a great race. That first climb was a lot more difficult than I thought it would be with the switchbacks it was pretty tough, and then the second half was good the rolling hills were tough but I liked it a lot,” said Chavez, who finished 17th (top American) at the Junior World Mountain Running Championships in Italy last year.
The Beaver Creek Trail started at 8,100 feet and climbed a total of 1,300 feet in elevation.
"Jordan ran a great race. Any time you win an event by 90 seconds over a quality field like the XTERRA races have it's an achievement,” commented head coach Steve Taylor. “He is obviously working hard this summer and doing his best to earn a spot on the 2013 Junior US Mountain Running Team which travels to Poland this September. This race had a lot of single-track trails. Combine that with a starting elevation of 8,100 feet and an elevation climb of 1,300 feet and you have a tough course. Mountain running is a focus for our men's team and Jordan, Justin Keefe and Tim Gruber have spent the summer training in the Colorado Mountains preparing for the cross country season.”
