UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Former Spider standout Mandy Friend was named to the Team Canada roster for the 2013 Women's Lacrosse World Cup being held in Oshawa, ON July 10-20, 2013.
Friend, a former All-American and the all-time leading scorer in program history, was one of 18 players selected to represent Canada at the 2013 FIL Women's Field World Cup.
Friend ('09) helped guide the Spiders to three consecutive conference titles and was named an All-Conference selection every season as a Spider. Friend still holds the record for goals (62), assists (36) and points (89) in a season. Additionally, Friend owns the program's all-time goals (215), assists (93) and points (308) mark.
The Team Canada coaching staff of head coach Venechanos, along with assistant coaches Susan Stuart, Alex Kahoe and Michele Uhlfelder started the selection process last summer.
“Selecting the final roster for the World Cup has been one of the most thrilling yet toughest parts of our job,” stated Venechanos. “The coaching staff has enjoyed working and coaching all of the players throughout the [selection] journey. We have selected the 18 players we feel will give Team Canada the edge come July,” she continued.
The final eighteen-player roster will represent Canada as the FIL Women's Lacrosse World Cup comes to Canada for the first time. Canada is currently ranked third in the world in senior women's field, with their most recent bronze being claimed in Prague (Czech Republic) during the 2009 FIL Women's Lacrosse World Cup.
