The Richmond women's lacrosse team has been very active this summer not only on the field but off the field as well. Throughout the next several weeks the squad will be sharing their summer adventures to let you know what they have been up to this summer.
Summer Spider Adventures: A series detailing some of our Spiders' summer adventures. Follow these posts to learn more about a few Spiders and what they have been up to this summer!
Summer Spider Adventures 3: Rising juniors, Janie Penney and Emily Doyle, were selected to participate in “Academics and Athletics in Spain,” a unique summer study-abroad opportunity available specifically to student-athletes.
The 5-week program, held in Seville, Spain, allows students to choose one or two classes taught exclusively in Spanish. All of the courses offered for choice are transferrable to the University of Richmond for major, minor, or elective credit. Athletically, student-athletes are able to train together during their time in Spain, building cohesion among the group.
In addition to studying abroad and training, each student-athlete is fully immersed in Spanish culture by living with a host family during the entirety of the trip. The trip provides student-athletes with a rare opportunity to pursue both academics and athletics abroad, and is a demonstration of the University's continued support for extracurricular involvement in athletics. Hear more about Janie and Emily's experience in their own words…
Spending five weeks in Seville, Spain with 15 other student-athletes from Richmond was such a wonderful experience. We took one Spanish class five days a week with Professor Carlos Valencia. Our knowledge of the language improved greatly not only because of the classes we took but because of the experience we gained speaking Spanish every day with our host families. We were all paired with host families who, for the most part, didn't speak any English, encouraging us to practice and learn more about the Spanish language.
We had the privilege of working out at a local gym in which we had access to a weight room three mornings a week, and a track twice a week. Since our class was in the evening, we had the morning set aside for working out, studying for class, and seeing all that the beautiful city of Seville has to offer!
It was an absolutely incredible trip where we made many memories that will last a lifetime. Our experience with the academics and athletics program in Spain allowed us to study and train alongside fellow Spiders, while learning first hand about one of the great European cultures. We encourage every student-athlete to take advantage of this program; it was truly life changing.
