Spider Football Practice Report No. 10
08/17/2013 | Football
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders football team was back at Robins Stadium for their first scrimmage of camp on Saturday morning.
The team practiced for the first hour of practice before scrimmaging for the final hour. The team focused on goal line and red zone situations in front of a strong contingent of Spider Football fans.
In the scrimmage, the team had 17 series, with the first-team getting eight, the second-team six and the rookies getting three.
Early in the scrimmage, the defense was strong, getting the best of the offense and forcing some early punts. On the first series for the second-team defense, DB DeShawn Holmes and DL Nick Velardo teamed up for a safety, corralling RB T.J. Moon in the backfield.
Other early defensive standouts included DL Kerry Wynn and DL Terrence Fullum, who both came up with sacks for the defense.
DB Justin Grant continued to impress working with the first-team defense, coming up with an interception of QB Michael Strauss, nearly returning the pick for a touchdown. Fellow DB David Jones also looked good, coming up with a fumble on the scrimmage's final play.
The scrimmage belonged to the offense, however, as the white team scored six-consecutive touchdowns at one point. In the red zone, the offense scored on 7-of-8 series, scoring six touchdowns and one 23-yard field goal from Brandon Jordi.
For the quarterbacks, Michael Strauss had two touchdown passes, while Montel White and Kyle Lauletta had one each.
Redshirt-freshman David Broadus had a great scrimmage, looking sharp and leading a pair of touchdown drives, including rushing one in himself from two yards out. Broadus was also strong at punting, booming two of his three attempts well over 40 yards.
WR Stephen Barnette and TE Christian Conklin each had a pair of touchdown receptions on the day, while WR Shane Savage had the day's longest play – a 31-yard catch-and-run from Lauletta.
At running back, Moon had a great day, running physically and scoring one touchdown. RB Jacobi Green also looked sharp, running well on his carries.
On special teams, Jordi went 4-for-4 on his PATs to go with his one field goal, while Peter Yoder converted on his on PAT on the day.
The Richmond Spiders will have their first off day of training camp on Sunday before getting back to practice on Monday at 9:45 a.m. at Robins Stadium.
Post-Practice Quote
“I don't think we were nearly as sharp as we've been the last week of camp. When we got down in the red zone, though, the offense was able to hit its stride, scoring six-consecutive touchdowns. I thought we were pretty physical out here, but not nearly as consistent as you need to be to beat a good football team.”
