08/20/2013 | Football
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Spiders football team was back at Robins Stadium for their second scrimmage of camp Tuesday morning.
The team practiced for the first hour of practice before scrimmaging for the final 60 minutes. The team focused on the first team offense and defenses throughout eight scripted series.
Early in the scrimmage, the defense was strong, getting the best of the offense and forcing some early punts. QB David Broadus took the first two punts, kicking both well over 30 yards.
The defense standouts included DB David Jones and DB Justin Grant who caused several pass breakups in the scrimmage. Fellow DB Wayne Pettus snagged the only interception of the day.
Defensive linemen Kerry Wynn and Evan Kelly stood out at the scrimmage, recording several quarterback hurries. Later, Wynn tabbed a sack for a loss of five yards.
On offense, RB T.J. Moon and FB Seth Fisher recorded the majority of the carries. Fisher found the end zone first as he punched it in for three yards on a third and goal situation. The second touchdown came from Broadus as he ran it in on second down for two yards.
The Richmond Spiders will treat tomorrow as a mock game day and return to Robins Stadium for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
Post-Practice Quote
“We had a pretty good day. I think that we are at that point right now where we have just about everything in that we need to have in to play a football game. What I wanted to do out here today was put together some extended drives. We had a number of drives that were 9, 10, 12 plays and all thud, all covering different downs and different field positions and having to incorporate different substitution patterns. I thought we got a lot done and we will come out tomorrow and build upon that and incorporate difference phases of special teams and feel more like a game.”
