Seniors Lead Spiders Past ODU, 3-1
08/25/2013 | Women's Soccer
HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Three seniors scored as Richmond cruised to its first win of the season, 3-1, over Old Dominion Sunday at the JMU Tournament.
“We had great performances from all five seniors,” said head coach Peter Albright. “This was a very well-rounded win, with everyone really contributing.”
Senior Becca Wann scored her second goal in as many games when she put back a rebound shot from classmate Kristen Lybert in the game's 37th minute. Erin Layne notched her first goal of the season from a Jensen Smith pass at the 67:11 mark to give the Spiders a comfortable 2-0 lead.
ODU (0-2) would respond with a score five minutes later, but a Lybert goal in the 75th minute put the game out of reach. Lybert received the feed from sophomore Ashley Riefner.
Richmond (1-1) outshot ODU 18-6, led by Wann's six attempts. Lybert added four shots while four other Spiders recorded two shots apiece. Lybert tallied a game-high three points (1g, 1a) to lead the Spiders. Wann and freshman Hunter Rooney were tabbed to the All-Tournament team.
Freshman goalkeeper Devin O'Brien had four saves in goal.
Richmond hosts Longwood Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in its home opener at Robins Stadium.
