UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. -- Richmond battled Longwood to a scoreless draw in its home opener Friday night at Robins Stadium.
“I was very proud of our effort in the second half and overtime periods,” said head coach Peter Albright. “We put together a better effort in the last half of play and I was proud of how our seniors fought tonight. Freshman Devin O'Brien played terrific in goal. Tonight was a battle against a very hard-working Longwood team.”
Richmond (1-1-1) outshot the Lancers, 27-16, with seniors Erin Layne and Kristen Lybert recording five attempts each. Crystal Koczot and Kaleigh Kurtz added three shots apiece.
Layne nearly scored in the second overtime to end the thrilling back-and-forth game but her laser shot attempt hit the center post.
Longwood (0-1-2) recorded its second-straight scoreless draw and was led in shot attempts by Kelsey Pardue's four tries.
After a close 7-6 edge in shots the first half, the Spiders outshot Longwood 14-6 in the second frame.
Devin O'Brien had nine saves in goal as she recorded the first shutout of her career.
Richmond plays at No. 5 Virginia Sunday at 5 p.m.
