08/29/2013 | Women's Lacrosse
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Hayley Ross, Taylor Blazer, Anna Jeszeck and Allie Ware have been named the 2014 Richmond women's lacrosse captains as announced by head coach Allison Evans Thursday afternoon.
“I couldn't be more excited about these four young women being chosen as captains for our team this year,” commented Evans. “Each are different from the other, but together they are a wonderful complement and the right combination to propel this team forward to an A-10 championship and NCAA tournament berth.”
Ross enters her senior season tied third on the team in ground balls in 2013. The Annapolis, Md., native played in all 17 games, making 16 starts and recorded 13 goals, 20 assists and 23 points. She charted her second career hat trick in the win against James Madison and had a season-best two assists twice last season.
Evans on Ross:
“Hayley is a great example of someone who gets out of her comfort zone in order to grow and achieve both on and off the field. This is especially true for her growth as a leader. She has been able to push past what was uncomfortable to reach higher goals for herself and the team. Because of that, Hayley never settles and constantly demands more from herself and those around her. This team looks to her for that extra motivation and as an example of how you can continue to push yourself to a higher level.”
Blazer appeared in all 17 games, earning 16 starts for the Spiders a year ago. The A-10 All-Conference team selection led Richmond in draw controls (47) and caused turnovers (23) and was second on the squad in ground balls with 36. The Berlin, Md., native registered six games with three or more ground balls and multi caused turnovers and eight games with three or more draw controls.
Evans on Blazer:
“Taylor's leadership on the field and her competitiveness are a driving force for our success. She is relentless on the field with her own game, but also very aware of her teammates around her. She has a knack for knowing what the team needs to hear and what individuals need to spark their play. Off the field, Taylor is a great listener and someone who teammates go to for sound advice and guidance. All in all, she is pivotal for our continued accomplishments on and off the field.”
Jeszeck, the only junior of the four, enters the 2014 season starting 16 games as a sophomore. The Cortlandt Manor, N.Y., native's 24 ground balls landed her tied for third on the squad. The midfielder eight games with two or more ground balls and found the back of the net against Old Dominion.
Evans on Jeszeck:
“As a junior, I couldn't be more excited for Anna being voted as a captain. In two years, Anna has shown her teammates and coaching staff her passion for this team and desire to push her teammates to success. She has a lot of leadership strengths, but what impresses me most, is Anna's recognition of her weaknesses and wanting to develop those into strengths. That is a rare quality to have and I'm eager to watch her grow in those areas this year.”
Ware is coming off appearing in four games and causing a turnover against No. 5 Duke her junior campaign. As a sophomore the Denver, Colo., native played 12 games, making four starts and found the back of the net against La Salle and Temple.
Evans on Ware:
“Nobody loves being a Spider more than Allie. Her passion for this University and lacrosse program is evident in everything she does and acts as sparks for our team. Allie never gives less than her all, whether that's on the field, in the weight room or in the Richmond community, and she demands the same from her teammates. Her expectation is that this team exhibits honesty, respect, and integrity in all facets of life. Allie's leadership is essential to the success of this team and the future of our program.”
