Richmond Taken Down At No. 6 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Richmond was downed at No. 6 Virginia, 3-0, Sunday night at Klockner Stadium.
“It was a gutty performance by Richmond,” said head coach Peter Albright. “I'm so proud of our team. I think Virginia is the best team in the country. They have a great chance at winning a national championship this year. It's always a stretch game for us to come up here and there's always a threat of a really one-sided game but I thought we had a solid game plan. The kids battled and were so committed to staying in the game. I thought it was a great performance. We love coming here and testing ourselves against the best. Hunter Rooney was tremendous at center back, Devin O'Brien did a nice job in goal under a ton of pressure. Erin Layne gave everything she had. I'm really proud of the team.”
To begin the game, Richmond's defense clogged the box thwarting many early Virginia threats. Freshman goalkeeper Devin O'Brien turned away 11 Virginia shots before the Cavaliers struck at the 22-minute mark.
Virginia (4-0-0) would add a goal two minutes later to take a 2-0 lead into the break. The Cavaliers scored again in the game's 55 minute to seal the win.
O'Brien had four saves in the game's first 15 minutes, mostly diving stops, and ended her night with eight saves.
Freshman Kaleigh Kurtz led Richmond with two shots.
Senior captain Becca Wann did not play due to a concussion suffered at the James Madison tournament last weekend.
The Spiders (1-2-1) resume action at Princeton Friday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m.
