Spiders Dominate Campbell At VCU Tournament
09/13/2013 | Women's Soccer
SPORTS BACKERS STADIUM, Va. – Richmond dominated Campbell, 2-0, in the opening game of the VCU Tournament.
“I thought we came out and played well,” said Peter Albright. “Our spirit was great and we created opportunities for us to score. Erin Layne has been knocking on the door to score for awhile, so I was glad she was able to put one through. Emily Kelly had a solid game in goal for us in her first collegiate start. We need to play with the same intensity on Sunday against Maine.”
Layne received a feed from a Darian Podmajersky pass and sped to the goal, putting the ball through the lower left part of the net at the 33:19 mark to give Richmond the 1-0 lead.
Richmond (2-4-1) was the clear aggressor in the first half, outshooting Campbell 8-3 and earning three corners.
Shannon Colligan added the insurance score in the 77th minute when a rebound shot attempt from Ashley Williams went off the Campbell keeper. A waiting Colligan took advantage of the blocked save to score her first goal as a Spider.
Campbell (4-2-0) nearly tied in the 71st minute but goalkeeper Emily Kelly had a diving stop inside the box to thwart the Camels' best attempt at equaling the score. Kelly made her first start in goal for Richmond and had two saves.
Richmond outshot the Camels, 14-5, led by Layne's three attempts.
The Spiders conclude tournament action against Maine Sunday at noon.
