Richmond Ties Maine At VCU Tournament
09/15/2013 | Women's Soccer
SPORTS BACKERS STADIUM, Va. – Richmond tied Maine, 0-0, in double overtime at the VCU Tournament Sunday at Sports Backers Stadium.
“Emily Kelly played another excellent game in goal,” said head coach Peter Albright. “Maine was very well-organized but I thought we had the better chance to win. We didn't get the goal and it ended as one of those frustrating games with a tie. We created enough chances to get the goal, it just didn't land for us.”
Richmond (2-4-2) had nine shots on the day, with Erin Layne and Shannon Colligan leading with two attempts apiece. Samantha Ciconni nearly had the game-winner off a header in the 71st minute but the Maine (3-2-2) keeper came up with the attempt. Darian Podmajersky almost had a score late in the first half off a corner kick, but the header attempt was blocked by the Black Bears keeper.
The Spiders won the corner advantage, 6-5, with five of those tries coming in the first half.
Kelly had five saves in goal for Richmond.
Richmond resumes action next Friday at No. 10 West Virginia. First kick is scheduled for 7 p.m.
