MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- Richmond held the No. 21 Mountaineers scoreless at the break but fell 2-0 Friday night in Morgantown, W. Va.
“This was a great defensive performance against a terrific team,” said head coach Peter Albright. “Emily [Kelly] was great in goal an everyone gave a tough, committed performance. We took a lot out of this one. This effort will help us down the road.”
The Spider defense turned away 10 first-half shots but West Virginia (5-2-2) put a goal through in the game's 62nd minute when Kelsie Maloney headed a pass in from Frances Silva. The Mountaineers would add an insurance score in the 76th minute for the win.
Erin Layne, Kaleigh Kurtz, Crystal Koczot and Darian Podmajersky each had a shot.
Emily Kelly had two saves in goal.
Richmond (2-5-2) travels to American Wednesday, Sept. 25 for a 4 p.m. game.
