Spiders Overpower American, 3-1
09/26/2013 | Women's Soccer
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Richmond cruised past American, 3-1, Wednesday afternoon in the nation's capital.
“It was a really good offensive performance in terms of ball movement and speed of play,” said head coach Peter Albright. “Hunter Rooney was tremendous in the back and we got great performances from Ashley Williams and Violet Miller in the center. Jensen's goal was terrific. Now, we regroup for our conference opener at Dayton.”
The Spiders (3-5-2) struck first when senior Kristen Lybert scored in the game's 14th minute off a Lindsay Egbers pass. Richmond bolstered its lead right before halftime when Violet Miller put a goal through after a pass from Samantha Cicconi and Dana Bernetich.
Richmond added to the dominance when senior Jensen Smith scored in the 55th minute from a feed from Ashley Williams. American (3-7-0) would add a goal at the 82:56 mark.
Richmond won the shot category, 15-11, led by Miller and Erin Layne's three attempts. The three-goal total matched a season-high for the Spiders.
The Spiders open Atlantic 10 action at Dayton Saturday, Sept. 28 at 6 p.m.
