Giant vs. Giant?
Since the 2006 season, the Richmond Spiders have defeated three FBS teams. In 2006, the Spiders shut out Duke, 13-0. Three years later, Richmond again took down Duke, beating the Blue Devils, 24-16. In 2011, the Spiders defeated Duke for the third-straight time, 23-21, in Durham. Richmond's only win against N.C. State came in the 1970 season.
Richmond Moves Up In FCS Coaches Poll
The Spiders jumped two spots to No. 12 in the Coaches Poll after dismantling the VMI Keydets, 34-0, at Robins Stadium. In the Sports Network FCS Top 25, Richmond remained ranked No. 15 in the nation.
Spiders Open Season with 34-0 Shutout of VMI
Richmond opened the season on a strong note, defeating in-state rival VMI, 34-0, at a sold-out Robins Stadium. The blanking was the 33rd shutout to start a season for the Spiders and marked the largest win for Richmond in a season-opener since beating VMI, 42-6, in 1999.
Non-League Brilliance
Richmond has not lost a non-conference FCS game in the regular season since 2005 and is a spotless 17-0 since then. The last FCS loss in the regular season was at Lafayette, 7-0, in 2005. Including the Spiders' annual game versus an FBS opponent, Richmond's non-conference regular-season record since 2007 is 15-4 (that includes wins at Duke in 2009 and 2011).
Green(er) Pastures
Sophomore Jacobi Green is expected to get more of an opportunity this season for the Spiders and the running back took full advantage against VMI on August 31. Green ran for a career-high 95 yards on just eight carries with a receiving touchdown, including a career-long run of 53 yards.
