I'm sure that most of you who follow us on Facebook or Twitter have already found out about the surprise I've been alluding to over the past few blogs. But for those of you, who haven't, after morning practice our team travelled to Gainesville to see the Richmond men's basketball team take on the Florida Gators. Before going to the basketball game though, we were able to catch most of a dual swim meet between the University of Florida and Florida State University. It was awesome to see these two great teams duke it out and to see some of the nation's top swimmers hit the water. A lot of us have friends on these teams, so it was especially fun to watch our buddies race.
After watching the meet, we headed over to the basketball arena to see the Spiders in action. Oh, and of course we were outrageously excited to see our weights coach, Jay DeMayo, on the court. I must admit that I was a bit distracted by Jay sitting next to the basketball team trainer, Adam, since they both have shaved heads that gleam up into the stands. It was kind of like staring into the sun—I was mesmerized and then temporarily blinded.
Anyways, we watched the Spiders put up a great fight against such a highly ranked team. The Spiders and Gators went back and forth with the score during the second half, but the Gators took home the win in the end. We had a great time cheering on our classmates and representing the University of Richmond up in the stands.
Perhaps one of the most fun aspects of this day was goofing off in the van rides to and from Gainesville. We racked up around six hours of travel time, but we played lots of van games (much to Matt's dismay), shared stories, and sang along to the radio. One particular game I like to play when in Matt's van is called, “But Travis Let Us.” This is where we try to convince Matt to stop at 7-11 for Slurpees or at the Alligator Farm by telling him that our old assistant coach, Travis, would have let us. This game has only worked once, but it's always tons of fun. Let me take this moment to give a shout out to Travis Stensby—little do you know how much we talk about you and miss you. And major props to Matt and Fernando for putting up with two vans of annoying girls all day. I know that we all created some great memories on this trip.
Well, it's time to get a little rest before we hit the icy water again tomorrow morning. We have just a few more days in Florida and are looking forward to making the most of this time. Goodnight, Spider fans!
