Senior Jessie Krebs will chronicle her time with the Spider Swim & Dive squad on the team's winter training trip to Sarasota, Fla., this January. Below is her final blog entry of the trip.
January 6, 2014
First off, my apologies for the lack of blog yesterday. We had an action-packed day and there simply was not enough time to write a post. But to give you a little recap, we had another solid day of workouts and ended our day by taking sunset pictures on the beach. After that, the seniors headed to the traditional senior dinner with the coaches. And for those of you alumni who are wondering, yes, we did in fact go to the Sausage Kitchen this year. And it was AMAZING! Just kidding—we went to a very cool seafood restaurant in Siesta Key and then headed out for some ice cream at Big Olaf's with Fernando. This journey with Fernando was quite interesting and we did a little off-roading after a wrong turn. But don't worry – we arrived to the ice cream shop in one piece. Overall, we had a great evening and found it hard to believe that this was our last training trip and that this was our senior dinner. Kids, the years really do fly by.
We were up and at 'em again this morning and swam our long course workout in the fog. The weather took an interesting turn during the day, and by the time we got to afternoon practice the temperature had dropped and it was incredibly windy. Although these elements presented a challenge, we swam as a group and had an impressive practice. We repeated some fast 50's freestyle with short fins, and many girls were consistently holding 23's.
We returned to the condos this evening and threw together all of our remaining food for dinner. Master chef Natalya spearheaded our condo's dinner and we created an impressive spread for a dinner of leftovers. After enjoying our meal, we headed down to the clubhouse for a final team meeting at the Casa Mar. The main takeaway from this evening's meeting was that our team has formed a family that loves each other, and we hope that this is a factor that will make our group hard to beat. We know that we still have a lot of work to do before we head to Geneva in February, but we have built a strong foundation over the season and especially during this week in Florida.
Most importantly, this foundation contains tons of love and we know that many other teams cannot say the same.
Today marked our last day in Florida, which means that this post also marks my last training trip blog entry. A big thank you to Matt for trusting me enough to write this blog over the past three years and an even bigger thanks to those of you who have followed. I've loved recording our team's adventures during these trips and hope that this blog tradition will continue. Another shout out goes to the Casa Mar for welcoming us to Siesta Key each year—we absolutely love staying in these condos that become the source of so many fantastic memories. And lastly, thank you to my teammates whose actions and words make it very easy to write these posts. It isn't hard to paint a pretty portrait when the real thing is already so beautiful. But enough for this corniness. I'll leave you with a final “harpoon,” but in photo evidence this time around. Yes, that is me falling overboard.
Thanks for reading and don't forget to follow the rest of our journey over the next two months!
