10/04/2014 | Women's Soccer
Redshirt freshman Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) recorded a pair of second-half goals to tie the contest, but the Spiders collected their first tie result of the season, 2-2 at Duquesne to start Atlantic 10 Conference play Friday night at Rooney Field. The tie puts UR at 6-5-1 on the season. The Dukes are now 3-5-3, and both squads hold 0-0-1 league marks.
It was the fourth time this season Carrigan scored twice in a match, leading to her conference-topping 10 goals. She is now in a tie for fourth in program history with her double-digit goal tally.
The teams played to a scoreless opening half. Duquesne was not able to get a shot until 30 minutes into the contest. Freshman goalkeeper Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) faced three shots in the opening half, while the Spiders got off nine shots in the first 45 minutes.

Duquesne broke through with the first goal of the game in the 50th minute when leading goal-scorer Maddie Layman got her fourth goal of the season on an assist from Linnea Faccenda for the 1-0 lead.
A foul in the goalie box gave the Dukes a penalty kick, which Layman put in for the 2-0 Dukes lead in the 64th minute.
“We made a mistake clearing the ball on the first one and then the penalty put us down 2-0,” said head coach Peter Albright.
“Duquesne was good and they made the game difficult for us.”
The Spiders came alive in the 71st minute on Carrigan's first goal, beating the keeper in the box after passes from freshman Olivia Aha (Norfolk, Massachusetts) and junior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut) to cut the lead in half.
“(Assistant Head Coach) Mika (Elovaara) told us to get control of the ball and good things will happen,” said Colligan of the start of the offensive success. “Off a throw in, I held the ball at my feet and shielded the defender and laid it off to Olivia and she played an amazing ball into the six-yard box and Meaghan volleyed it in.”
In the 78th minute, Colligan again assisted on an indirect kick to Carrigan in the box for the goal, which stood to the overtime period.
“We used it like a corner kick,” said Carrigan. “I didn't get it on my first run, but on my second run, it was timed perfectly to find Shannon's cross, which I managed to get my head on from five yards out.”
“To go on the road and play a tough team and be down 2-0 and still get a point, I'm pretty happy,” added Albright. “Meaghan had quality looks and Shannon really got our offense started.”
Brennan earned the tie (1-0-1) in her second career start. She made four saves in the draw.
The match was the fourth in which Carrigan scored twice and the Spiders are 5-0-1 in contests when a player nets two goals.
The Spiders will return home Saturday in time for the team to get in a quick workout before facing St. Bonaventure Sunday at 1 p.m. at Robins Stadium, Admission is free and there will be a postgame clinic put on by the players after the contest.
NOTES: Colligan's 11 assists also lead the A-10. She is just two assists away of the school record of 13.
