Spiders Score Five Goals And Post Shutout Sunday
10/05/2014 | Women's Soccer
Richmond scored a season-high five goals and pitched its first shutout of the season in a 5-0 home win over visiting St. Bonaventure for the Atlantic 10 Conference home opener Sunday at Robins Stadium. The Spiders improve to 7-5-1 on the season, 1-0-1 in the A-10. The Bonnies are 4-7-1, off to an 0-2 start in the A-10.
The five team goals are the most for the Spider in Robins Stadium and the most since posting seven goals in a road win November 2, 2002 at Massachusetts. The 16 points (five goals, six assists) tie for the most for Richmond as a member of the A-10 (with the UMass game in 2002).
Spider freshman Lexi Prillaman (Magnolia, Delaware) scored twice, including the fastest goal of the season for the Spiders in the win. Prillaman fired a shot to the far post upper 90 after a pass up the left side to Ashley Riefner (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) and the first collegiate assist for Alexis Pringle (Mechanicsville, Virginia / Atlee HS) in the third minute for the lead.

The score held until in the 32nd minute, when the conference's assist leader, Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut), recovered a save of her own shot and blasted it past keeper Christina Sarokon for the 2-0 lead. It was Colligan's first goal of the season.
The Spiders out shot the Bonnies 20-4 in the opening 45 minutes.
After the half, the Spiders came out with a flourish, scoring three goals in the first four minutes of the second half, all three coming in the span of a minute. Riefner got things started with a penalty kick after a foul in the box on the Bonnies in the 48th minute for the 3-0 lead.
Less than a minute later, Meaghan Carrigan (Greenville, South Carolina) got loose on passes up the right sideline from Ashley Williams (Williamsburg, Virginia / Warhill HS) and Prillaman fired from 10 yards to the far post. It was Carrigan's third goal of the weekend and league-leading 11th of the season
Less than minute later, on nearly an identical set-up, Prillaman got the goal on passes from Williams and Carrigan from almost the same spot for the game's final score.
Freshman Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) got credit for the clean sheet, the first shutout for the Spiders since last November 1 in a 3-0 win at VCU. Brennan had four saves to improve her season mark to an unbeaten 2-0-1.
The loss went to Sarokon, who is 1-4-1.
The Spiders will play just one match next week, a conference road match at Davidson, Saturday night at 7 p.m. It will be the first meeting between the schools as A-10 members, as the Wildcats joined the league this summer.
NOTES: Carrigan also leads the league with 24 points, as the assist to Prillaman was her second helper of the year… Riefner's seven goals and seven assists put her at 21 points, third in the league… Prillaman becomes the fourth Spider to score twice in a match this season... The Spiders are 6-0-1 when someone nets two goals this season... Richmond's 29 season goals are tops in the league and nearly double of last season's UR total.
