UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – The Richmond field hockey program will make its eighth appearance in the NCAA Tournament when the Spiders face the Liberty Flames in Lynchburg, Va., Wednesday at 2 p.m., announced the NCAA Sunday night.
Richmond won the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championship to earn the automatic berth into the postseason by shutting out UMass, 1-0, Saturday afternoon.
“I am just so excited to be in postseason play,” commented senior forward Allison Siegel. “This is everything our team has dreamt about the entire season and to play Liberty is really just such a honor. We have such friendly competition with them. We usually come up against them a few times in the spring and we have such a good relationship with this team. I could not think of a program that I respect more to step out on the field with in the postseason.”
Liberty earned its automatic berth by winning the NorPac Championship by defeating No. 4-ranked Stanford, 1-0. The Flames are 13-7 overall and are led by Sarah Gipe with 18 goals, seven assists and 43 points.
The winner of Wednesday's matchup will play the top-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels in the first round Saturday, Nov. 15 in Chapel Hill, N.C.
