Postgame Quotes - No. 25 JMU 55, No. 14 Richmond 20
11/15/2014 | Football
“Disappointing day for us. Nothing to feel very good about, and we give coach and his kids a lot of credit for coming in and taking control of the game. Two weeks in a row we have turned the ball over five times. It has put us in a really, really bad spot.
"Strauss gave us some momentum, energy and a shot to score the points we needed to score, but at the end of the day we didn't protect him very well, and some errors led to some easy scores for JMU. JMU is always creating formations, and you have to spend a lot of time to figure out who is eligible, who isn't, and our guys had a problem trying to figure out who was who. And they protected the quarterback very well.
"Seeing [Lee] here in person, his poise in the pocket was really significant. That was something I maybe did not recognize coming into the game. He moves around to extend the play and get the ball to the receiver. And if you let him run around, he's going to find that receiver.
"We had some history with him [Reynolds] and were aware of him coming out of high school. We knew his skill set, but I thought their defense was extraordinary today.
When we couldn't cut it to one score, the game got away from us. Our kids did not quit. I don't feel very good now. I might look a little differently tomorrow, but at the moment we certainly are not in a very good spot.“
-- Richmond head coach Danny Rocco
"I don't think rusty is the right word. I feel like I can play whenever. I just couldn't play exactly how I wanted to play. I felt well enough to play, in the first half I rolled up on my ankle pretty bad. I just kept trying to keep walking on it, moving around, and was just trying to finish the game.
"It comes down to everybody doing their job. It's a complete team effort. Turnovers kill momentum, so it is hard when we turn over the ball, especially five times. Any kind of turnover can take the momentum away. They did a good job, they did well, and they played better than us."
-- Richmond QB Michael Strauss
"Anytime with rivalry games, the emotions are important for the fans, but after the game starts its about playing football. And our team played great with adversity with having two teammates getting kicked out. It was a pretty good day and we are pretty excited about it.
"I think we have a group of players. We only talk about us, not the other teams, stadiums, etc. It's all about us. We've got a long way to go on defense. We are playing lots of young guys, but they come back to work every single day. We coach them hard but they are resilient and I thought today they stood up.
"Our protection was really good up front today. Our guys did a good job of finding seams, reading coverage and catching the balls.
[on targeting] "no comment."
-- James Madison head coach Everett Withers
