Soccer Outlasted 3-1 By Rhode Island Sunday

Richmond women's soccer lost at home for only the third time in 2014 on the final day of the regular season 3-1 to Rhode Island in Atlantic 10 Conference action at Robins Stadium Sunday afternoon. The loss slips the Spider record to 9-8-2, finishing with a 3-3-2 A-10 mark. Rhode Island improved to 12-4-2 overall, 4-3-1 in the A-10.
Despite the loss, Richmond finishes seventh in the league and will take on cross-town rival and second-seed VCU in the third quarterfinal at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Championships in Dayton, Ohio on Thursday.
The Rams got a first-half goal when they intercepted a keeper pass and found Ellie Bailes for her first of the season.
The Rams outshot the Spiders 6-4 in the opening half in chilly temperatures and driving winds.
The Rams got two more goals in the second half before the Spiders finally broke through when Kate Smith (Glastonbury, Connecticut) blasted a ball from 44 yards to find junior Shannon Colligan (Greenwich, Connecticut) for a header from seven yards for the game's final scoring play. It was Colligan's second goals of the season and the first assist from Smith in a Spider uniform.
Freshman goalkeeper Katie Brennan (Fairfield, Connecticut) took the loss for Richmond, despite collecting six saves. She falls to 4-3-2 on the year and finishes the regular season with a 1.25 goals-against average.
URI sophomore Katie Nickles improved to 8-0-2 in goal for the Rams. She had three saves.
NOTES: This was URI's first win in Robins Stadium… The Spiders are now 3-2-1 against Rhode Island all-time in home games… The Spiders and VCU played to a 0-0 tie back on October 17… Richmond is 6-5 all-time in Atlantic 10 Tournament games, but the Spiders and Rams have never faced one another in tournament play as either conference opponents in the CAA or A-10.
