FAIRFAX, Va. -- Richmond swimming and diving remains in fourth place after day two of the Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason this weekend. The Spiders have scored 353 points with one day remaining Saturday.
As they did in day one, the divers posted excellent scores, including a win for sophomore Irina Chiulli (Westwood, Massachusetts), who posted a winning score of 273.25, which was good enough to meet the standard to qualify for the NCAA Zones later this season in Buffalo. She has qualified for Zones in both of her two years diving for UR. That score is the highest achieved by a Richmond diver in the 1m so far this season.
Freshman Laura Rokop (Carmel, Indiana) posted a 222.70 score, good enough for fourth place in the event. Sophomore Mikaela Gekas-Robinson (Woodbury, New Jersey) landed 12th after scoring 177.95 in the event.
“I am very proud of our divers' performances this weekend,” said UR head diving coach Sean Letsinger. “They each did an exceptional job overcoming the mental obstacles that come with a lot of meet delays and competing in a pool that is remarkably colder than what they are accustomed to. I am very encouraged by this result that we are on the right track.”
On the swimming side, Richmond scored third as a team in the 200 Medley relay to start the evening, and Spiders scored points in four individual events in the finals session. The high score from the swimmers came in the person of Kelley Yang (Ellicott City, Maryland), who finished fifth in the 100 Fly.
Maggie Pope (Nashville, Tennessee) took sixth in the 100 Back, Annie Lane (Vinton, Virginia / William Byrd HS) finished seventh in the 400 IM and eighth in the 100 Breast, while the team found themselves seventh in the 800 Free relay to finish the night.
Rachel DuMez (Front Royal, Virginia / Wakefield Country Day) and Erin Barry (Millington, New Jersey) both scored points with 14th-place finishes in the preliminary rounds earlier in the afternoon.
Saturday begins with preliminary events at 10 a.m. before finals in five individual events and a 400 Free relay, which starts at 6 p.m. to finish the weekend.
