11/24/2014 | Baseball
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond head baseball coach Tracy Woodson announced Mike Goldberg as Volunteer Assistant Coach on Monday.
"We have a very close knit staff with great chemistry and the team feeds off that energy,” Woodson said. “Mike will add to that energy and fits in nicely with our Spider baseball family. I have known Mike and his family for a long time, as he is also a Benedictine product. His knowledge, work ethic, versatility to coach both position players and pitchers, and most importantly his passion for the coaching profession will make him a great addition to our staff.”
Goldberg comes to the Spiders after serving as the Director of Baseball Operations at VCU, as well as being an assistant coach and camp director for Gastonia Grizzlies. At Gastonia, Goldberg helped the team win an organization-high 29 games and for the best record in the first half of the season to clinch a playoff berth.
This coming summer, Goldberg will be the first head coach of the Charlottesville Tom Sox of the Valley League.
Goldberg graduated from Davidson College in 2014, where he played four years for the Wildcats. In 2014, Goldberg served as the team's closer for a team that would go on to be the winningest team in program history. Goldberg was a versatile player for head coach Dick Cooke, starting at five different positions.
For his career, Goldberg ranked fifth all-time in Davidson history in career saves and third all-time on the single-season list with eight in 2014.
In 2011, Goldberg was selected as an All-Star in the SCBL after a standout campaign with the Morganton Aggies – the only SCBL team to crack Perfect Game's Annual Top-25 Summer Collegiate Teams list.
A Richmond, Va. native, Goldberg played four seasons at Benedictine High School for former Richmond Spider standout Sean Ryan. At Benedictine, Goldberg holds the school record for consecutive games played at 102.
Goldberg currently resides in Richmond, Va.
