
Okoro Hits 1000th Point In Loss To Central Michigan

LAS VEGAS, N.V. – Despite redshirt-senior Genevieve Okoro scoring her 1,000th-career point, the Richmond women's basketball team was edged by Central Michigan, 61-56, in the first game of the South Point Thanksgiving Shootout Thursday evening at South Point Arena on Thanksgiving Day.
Okoro was one of four Spiders in double figures as she led the team with 13 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and her 23rd of her career. The Gibbsboro, N.J., native became the 21st Spider to hit the 1,000th point mark and moved into the top-20 in scoring with 1,008-career points.
Richmond was given its first loss of the season as they dropped to 3-1, while Central Michigan improved to 2-1 on the year.
In addition to Okoro, sophomore Janelle Hubbard also tallied 13 points, while juniors Bria Powell and Lauren Tolson followed with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
The Spiders were held to 34.9 percent from the field and 20.7 percent from behind the arc, but the Chippewas didn't do much better as they shot 36.8 percent from the floor. Central Michigan forced 20 Spider turnovers and turned them into 18 points, while hitting 11 more free throws than Richmond.
Richmond had control of the entire first 20 minutes as they went into the half with 28-24. Richmond shot 40.7 percent from the field in the first half. At the second media timeout, Genevieve Okoro tallied her fourth point of the contest to become the 21st Spider to hit 1,000-career points at Richmond at the 12:24 mark.
Powel led the Spiders with eight points as the junior went 4-for-4 from the field in the first 20 minutes.
Richmond led by as many as six in the second half, which came at the 12:11 mark off a jumper by Tolson (43-37), but the Chippewas used an 16-7 run to go ahead by two with under five minutes to play.
The Spiders cut the lead to one with 1:37 remaining but Central Michigan held on for the win.
Richmond will return to South Point Arena Saturday, Nov. 29 to take on SEC-foe Arkansas at 1 p.m. PST.
