The University of Richmond community, the athletic department and the Spider football family is mourning the loss of senior Kurt Schmitz, who died Saturday evening in Richmond. Schmitz was a political science major and three-year member of the football team from 2010 through 2012.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with Kurt's family and friends," said head football coach Danny Rocco. "Our football student-athletes have spoken of Kurt as an unselfish, kind-hearted young man who loved Spider football and Richmond Athletics."

Schmitz, a native of Haskell, NJ, played in six games for the Spiders as a true freshman in 2010, starting five games on the offensive line.
The university has reached out to the Schmitz family to offer its deepest condolences. Information about funeral arrangements will be shared when those details become available.
The University of Richmond flag will fly at half-staff Monday, December 1, through Wednesday, December 3, in recognition of Kurt's passing.
