
Women's Basketball Gets 5th-Straight With OT Win At UAB

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Richmond women's basketball team fought for its fifth-straight victory with a 71-65 overtime win over the UAB Blazers Tuesday night at the Bartow Arena.
After scoring four-straight points in the final minute of regulation to tie the score at 61, the Spiders held UAB (6-5) to just four points in overtime to secure the 71-65 victory.
Sophomore Janelle Hubbard led three Spiders in double figures with 19 points to improve Richmond to 8-4 overall. Sophomore Olivia Healy followed Hubbard with 15 points and nine rebounds.
Junior Lauren Tolson recorded her first-career double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also picked up five assists in the win. This is Tolson's third-straight game with five or more boards.
Richmond shot 43.9 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent from behind the arc, while UAB (6-5) shot 42.3 percent from the field. The Spiders forced 15 Blazer turnovers, which led to 29 Spider points.
The Spiders started the day with two-straight steals for a quick 4-0 lead 54 second into the game. From then on, Richmond held the lead and led by as many as eight at the 11:43 mark. But UAB went 11-for-19 for the entire 20 minutes as the Spiders had just the two-point lead at the half.
Hubbard led both teams with 14 points in the first half, as she was 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Hubbard helped the Spiders shoot 48 percent from the floor, while tallying five steals in the first half that led to 17 points off UAB turnovers.
The entire second half was back and forth. Richmond found itself down 61-57 with 1:24 left in regulation and two free throws from Hubbard with 30 seconds left put the Spiders within two. Then freshman Kylie Murphree made her third steal of the night and dished it to Tolson for an open layup to force overtime.
Richmond dominated overtime as it limited the Blazers to just one field goal the entire extra period. UAB shot 1-for-8, including 0-for-4 from three-point range. The Spiders outscored the Blazers 10-4 in the final five minutes to secure the victory.
The Spiders will continue on the road and begin conference play Sunday, Jan. 4 when they travel to Fordham for a 3:30 p.m. tip.
