Tolson's Career High Lifts Spiders Over UMass

AMHERST, Mass. – Sophomore Lauren Tolson was one of five Spiders in double figures as she set a career-high 17 points to lift the Richmond women's basketball team over the UMass Minutewomen, 89-76, Wednesday at the Mullins Center.
Richmond (12-14, 6-7 A-10) scored a season-high 89 points thanks to 49 percent from the field, while holding UMass (3-24, 0-13 A-10) to 45 percent and 9-of-14 free throws (64%). The Spiders forced 14 turnovers to pick up 15 points.
In addition to her career high, Tolson tallied seven rebounds. Senior Kristina King led the team with nine boards and tallied 16 points. Senior Amber Nichols tied her career-high 14 points, while bringing down five rebounds and two steals. Frehsman Janelle Hubbard also tallied 14 points and a career-high nine assists. Redshirt-junior Genevieve Okoro rounded out the pack with 11 points and two steals.
The Spiders came out hot in the first half, shooting a blazing 53 percent from the floor. Richmond raced out to a 20-11 lead 10 minutes in with the help of a 6-0 run at the start. Hitting seven treys to end the first 20 minutes with shooting 50 percent from three-point range, Richmond held the commanding 47-31 lead at halftime.
Hubbard led both teams with 10 points, four rebounds and three assists in the first half, while Tolson followed with nine points and five rebounds as she went 3-for-3 from behind the arc.
Richmond kept its momentum rolling in the second half. The Minutewomen tried to battle back, coming within nine three times under the 10-minute mark, but the Spiders held on for the win.
The Spiders return to the court Saturday, Feb. 22 to kickoff a doubleheader with the men, hosting George Washington at 12 p.m. on Senior Day. Senior's Kristina King, Amber Nichols and Becca Wann will be honored during pregame.
