Second Half Spider Rally Falls Short At George Mason

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. – Twenty-four percent first-half shooting put the Spiders in a big hole and a 44-point second-half was not enough to dig them out in a 69-60 loss at George Mason on Wednesday night.
Junior Kendall Anthony led the Spiders with 23 points, making five three-pointers as he passed 200 career three-pointers.
Richmond (18-10, 8-5 Atlantic 10) trailed 37-16 at the half after connecting on just 7-of-29 first half field gosl, combared to Mason's 16-of-27.
“I just thought we were on our heels a little bit,” Richmond head coach Chris Mooney said. “They're a good offensive team and they did a good job of driving the ball, getting chances in the paint.”
George Mason would lead by 23 in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Anthony and the Spiders went on a 16-5 run to cut the gap to 12 with 13:27 to play.
Richmond closed to within seven on a three-pointer by ShawnDre' Jones with 10:17 to play and after a back-and-forth few minutes, pulled to within five at 55-50 on a jumper by Jones with 5:15 remaining.
That was as close as the Spiders would get, as Mason used a 7-0 run to take a 62-50 lead with 2:30 to play. Richmond got no closer than seven the rest of the way.
Jones had nine points, making two three-pointers and sophomore Deion Taylor also had nine points, connecting on 2-of-3 treys. Sophomore Trey Davis scored eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds.
The Spiders play at Rhode Island on Saturday at 2 p.m. in a game televised on SNY and CSN Mid-Atlantic Plus.
