Women's Lacrosse Takes 13-4 Road Win At American
02/28/2014 | Women's Lacrosse
Richmond scored the first two goals Thursday against American and never trailed in a 13-4 win for the Spiders' first road win of the year at Jacobs Field in Washington, D.C. in women's lacrosse action. The game was postponed from Wednesday afternoon due to snow in the D.C. area.
Junior attack Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) and senior midfielder Hayley Ross (Annapolis, Md.) scored three goals each to lead the charge to an even 2-2 record for the Spiders. Doyle also recorded three assists in the contest for a game-high six points.
“Today was a great step forward for us,” said head coach Allison Evans.
“The team executed our game plan today. Defense set the tone and never let up for 60 minutes. I was impressed with the way our attacking unit found the back of the net and we connected on our passes through the midfield.”
Doyle scored the first goal of the game, a little more than four minutes in, and sophomore midfielder Emily Newman (New Albany, Ohio) scored just two minutes later for a 2-0 Richmond lead. Junior midfielder Anna Jeszeck (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) assisted on the Newman goal, one of her two assists in the game.
The Eagles (1-3) scored under a minute later before the Spiders put the next four goals in the back of the net and a 6-1 lead. American scored with 52 seconds remaining in the half to cut the lead to 6-2 at the break. Ross scored twice in the goal-scoring run, including one on a free position shot with 7:37 remaining in the half.
Richmond outshot the Eagles 15-7 in the opening period and won six of the nine draw controls in the first frame.
Doyle scored the first two goals of the second half in the first seven minutes in that stanza, as Richmond extended the lead out to 8-2. The two teams traded goals until the Spiders closed out the contest by scoring the last four. Doyle leads Richmond with eight goals and eight assists through the first four games.
Those goals included Ross's third of the game, and the second from junior attack Bailey Zerr (Denver, Colo.) and the second from freshman Emily Castle (Annapolis, Md.)
Junior goalie Emily Boyce (Middletown, Md.) recorded four saves in her second win of the season (2-2).
The Spiders took 10 more shots, six more ground balls and won 13 of the 19 draw controls in the game.
The Spiders finish their four-game road trip next Wednesday evening at Old Dominion, starting at 5 p.m.
NOTES: Richmond is 16-2 in the all-time series against American… Both Richmond wins have come when scoring double-digit goals and allowing single-digit goals…
