THE SERIES
This is the 68th meeting between the two teams and Richmond leads 34-33 in a series that dates back to 1941. The Spiders and the Rams last met Feb. 20, 2012 when Richmond won its fifth-straight against the cross-town rival, 66-62 victory at the Robins Center. Richmond's 34 wins are the third most against a program. (1. 88 - William & Mary, 2. 36 - Sweet Briar, 3. 34 - VCU)
THE SPIDERS
The Spiders are coming off a tough 55-45 loss to conference-leader Duquesne last Saturday. Richmond is 10-12 overall and 4-5 in the conference as it travels cross-town to the Siegel Center. The Spiders are shooting 37.8 percent from the floor and are averaging 8.5 steals per game, which ranks third overall in the conference.
THE RAMS
The Rams enter Saturday 17-6 on the season and 5-5 as they are have dropped the last two contests. VCU is 8-2 in the Siegel Center and started the season with a 13-game winning streak. The Rams are outscoring their opponents by a 11.3 scoring margin, while averaging 79.3 points per game and forcing 22 turnovers this season.
LAST TIME OUT
Despite three Spiders in double figures, the Spiders fell to the Duquesne Dukes, 55-45, in A-10 action Saturday night at the Robins Center. Redshirt-junior Genevieve Okoro tallied her 15th double-digit scoring game and her fourth double-double of the season as she led the team with 11 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Freshman Janelle Hubbard and sophomore Lauren Tolson followed with 10 points each. Sophomore Bria Powell tallied a career-high seven rebounds, including six offensive. The Spiders outrebounded the Dukes, 41-36, forced 12 turnovers and held Duquesne to a 38.8 shooting percentage. However, the Dukes shot 45.5 percent from three-point range and went 12-of-16 from the line, compared to just six trips for the Spiders.
HUBBARD STEPPING UP TO THE PLATE
After winning the starting job six games ago and Richmond's leading scorer going down against St. Bonaventure, Hubbard has stepped up to the plate helping the Spiders clinch three conference wins. The freshman is averaging 15.8 points per game, shooting 38.6 percent from the field and has gone 11-of-13 from the free throw line in the last five contests.
HEALY'S IMPRESSIVE FRESHMAN CAMPAIGN COMES TO AN END
Reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week, Olivia Healy, suffered a season-ending injury at Saint Louis Wednesday, Jan. 22. The Reading, Mass., native had her best game of the season, leading both teams with a career-high 22 points and nine rebounds in 30 minutes played. Healy leads the team in scoring average (12.3), field goal attempts (217), field goals made (91) and steals (42). She finished the season with nine double-digit scoring games, four 20-point outings, four double-doubles and three games with five or more assists.
