Chiulli 21st In 1m Springboard at NCAA Zones
03/10/2014 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Freshman Irina Chiulli (Westwood, Mass.) was two points away from qualifying for the finals in day one of the NCAA Diving Zones, held at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center just outside of Blacksburg, Va. Monday afternoon. Chiulli scored 222.50 for her six preliminary dives, finishing 21st. She was just 2.20 points away from the cut to the finals, which took 18 divers.
"For her first time in an NCAA Zone, she didn't perform badly," said Richmond diving coach Sean Letsinger. "She was fairly consistent and just outside the cut, so our hope is that Tuesday's three-meter event, where she has been stronger, will go better."
Chiulli will dive Tuesday in the women's 3m, with the preliminaries to go first at noon before a cut down for the finals, around 3 p.m. At least the top two finishers of the 3m competition will qualify for the NCAA Championships. Live results are available online.
Chiulli and Richmond's other two divers all scored points at the 2014 Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships, where the Spiders captured their fourth-straight conference title, and 12th in the last 13 seasons.
