Boyce Wins Award & No. 6 Irish Visit Tuesday
03/10/2014 | Women's Lacrosse
Junior Emily Boyce (Middleton, Md.) was today named the Atlantic 10 Conference Women's Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week after the Spiders have won their last two games, bpoth on the road.
She was key in Richmond's second-straight road win, a 9-5 decision at Old Dominion last Wednesday. She was credited with seven saves and six ground balls in the victory, pushing the Spiders record over .500, at 3-2. Her save percentage of .583 in the game was her highest of the season to date.
Tuesday, the Spiders host sixth-ranked Notre Dame to Robins Stadium for a 3 p.m. contest. This is the third Top-10 opponent Richmond has faced this season, but the first one at home. The Spiders won their only home contest to date, the season opener over Liberty, 16-7. The Spiders have split their last four games, all away from home, entering the Tuesday contest at 3-2.
Junior Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) leads the team with nine goals and nine assists, with senior Hayley Ross (Annapolis, Md.) one goal back of the team leader. The Spiders have been excellent at controlling the draws, winning 64 of the 110 draws this season (58.2 percent).
The Fighting Irish are 5-2, coming off a strong win at No. 4 Northwestern 9-8 last Wednesday, causing their move up in the polls. It was only the fourth loss in the last 105 games where the home team Wildcats did not come away with the win. Freshman attack Cortney Fortunato has netted 20 goals so far this season, the only freshman in the country with that many goals.
The Spiders lost at Notre Dame 14-13 in South Bend in the last meeting, back in 2000. Richmond is looking for its first win in three tries against the Irish.
Admission is free for Richmond lacrosse this season.
