Men's LAX Hosts Wagner Under the Lights Friday
03/20/2014 | Men's Lacrosse
After three games away from Robins Stadium, the Richmond men's lacrosse team returns home to take on Wagner Friday night as the second game of a lacrosse doubleheader with the women, beginning approximately at 8 p.m. Richmond men's lacrosse is presented this season by Select Sector SPDRs.
Following the 6 p.m. women's game against William & Mary, the Spiders (1-7) will faceoff against the Seahawks for the first game in Robins Stadium since March 4. The Spiders claimed their first win in the program's inaugural season on March 8, in a home game played in Durham, N.C. against Vermont. Five of the eight Richmond games have been decided by three or fewer goals.
The Spiders have been defensive minded in the past four games, allowing no more than 11 goals in a game in the second-half of the schedule so far. Only one opponent has scored more than 14 goals in a game against the Spiders this season.
Freshman Mitch Goldberg (Damascus, Md.) posted his fourth hat trick of the season in Monday's 10-7 loss at Rutgers. He leads the team with 17 goals and 23 points on the season. His goal total is second-most among freshman nationally heading into the weekend.
Even though the Spiders have been outshot by opponents, the Spiders have had nearly 63 percent of shot attempts on goal, allowing opponents to shoot a 55.6 percent rate on goal. Richmond's percentage of shots on goal is 28th in the country.
Wagner (2-4) got its second win of the season Tuesday at VMI, taking a 7-6 win in Lexington. Their other win on the ledger was a four-overtime 7-6 victory over Monmouth on February 26. The Seahawks are turning in a 61.8 percent on-goal mark so far this season, despite scoring 7.5 goals per game this season. Four of the six Wagner games have been decided by one goal each, holding three opponents to a single-digit goal total.
Paul DeVita leads the team with eight goals scored, with three other Seahawks putting up seven so far this year. A pair of Seahawks have a team-best nine assists in their six games played.
