Richmond long-stick midfielder Brendan Hynes (Mahopac, N.Y.) was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the league announced today. The 6-3 freshman is the first in school history to earn a weekly league honor.
The Spiders split a pair of games last week, winning their first game in Robins Stadium Friday night, a 14-7 victory over Wagner. The Spiders held an opponent scoreless in a quarter for the first time all year and the seven goals allowed set the new program mark for defense.
Hynes tied a career-high and school mark with eight ground balls in the Wagner victory to secure Defensive Player of Week honors. The freshman also caused seven turnovers to aid the defensive effort. Hynes leads the team in ground balls and caused turnovers. In two games he picked up 11 ground balls and caused eight total turnovers as the Spiders went 1-1 on the week.
Richmond took a 10-7 loss Monday at Rutgers, which was receiving votes in two national polls. He collected three ground balls and caused a turnover in the contest.
This week, the Spiders head to New York to face 12th-ranked Bryant at Cold Spring Harbor High School Saturday afternoon, with the opening faceoff scheduled for 2 p.m.
