Game On! Men's Lacrosse Hosts Holy Cross Tuesday
03/04/2014 | Men's Lacrosse
Tuesday's scheduled men's lacrosse game between visiting Holy Cross and Richmond, is on for a 4 p.m. faceoff, university officials announced today. The Spiders are home after a pair of road games, at Mercer and at UMBC, over the past two weeks.
Richmond has started its inaugural season 0-4, averaging nearly nine goals per game this season. The Spiders are led by a slew of first-year players, statistically by freshman Mitch Goldberg (Damascus, Md.) and his nine goals and three assists, and by sophomore Brad Burnam (Nedrow, N.Y.) with his three goals and seven assists.
Richmond's strong suit has been its defense and penalty killing. Richmond has held opponents to five goals in 14 man-up opportunities for a 35.7 percent defense rate. In contrast, Richmond has scored nine goals in 20 such opportunities, for a 45 percent success rate. That percentage is ranked 18th in the NCAA so far this season, as of the latest statistical rankings release.
The Spiders are also more accurate than opponents this season. Richmond is putting more than 60 percent of shots attempted on goal, while opponents are at 58.9 percent this season.
The Crusaders are also off to an 0-4 start. Junior Terry McKenna has recorded a hat trick in both of the last two Holy Cross games, at Navy Saturday and at Harvard last Tuesday. Holy Cross is allowing a little more than 17 goals per game.
Following Tuesday's game, the Spiders will host Vermont in a 1 p.m. game in Durham, N.C. on Saturday afternoon.
