03/06/2014 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond men's lacrosse will be the feature college game this weekend in the King of Spring Lacrosse Classic, which supports the Rangers Lead the Way Fund, in Durham, N.C. on Saturday. The tournament organizer was an assistant coach at Duke of both current Richmond head coach Dan Chemotti, and the fallen Ranger for whom the charity was founded, Sgt. James J. Regan. Admission will be five dollars, with the proceeds going to the fund.
The Spiders will host Vermont at 1 p.m. at Durham County Stadium, home of the Shaw University Bears and the Carolina Phoenix. Nearly 30 high school lacrosse teams will be playing games over four days on four different fields for the weekend, with the Spiders and Catamounts being the featured college game in the middle of the classic.
Richmond has started 0-5 in its inaugural campaign, falling 11-9 at home Tuesday to Holy Cross. The Catamounts have won their last three games, including an 18-7 result Wednesday at VMI. Vermont is off to a 3-2 start to the season.
Richmond has one of the nation's premiere freshman scorers, Mitch Goldberg (Damascus, Md.), who has three hat tricks in the five games played this season, with at least one goal in all five games. His 13 goals are tied for fourth from any freshman in the nation this season. The Spiders have had 33 of their 44 goals scored by first-year players, the highest number of freshmen goals in the country, second-most only to Boston University by percentage (90.6%).
Vermont's 18 goals Wednesday were the most in program history since 2007. Five players recorded multi-goal games and three players logged four assists. Vermont has averaged better than 10 goals per game, allowing nine per this season.
The Spiders will go on the road for their next two games, until returning home on March 21 against Wagner for the lone home night contest of the season, at 8 p.m.
