Spiders Rally But Fall At Saint Louis, 7-6
04/18/2014 | Baseball
ST. LOUIS – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team rallied to tie the game in the ninth, but lost in the bottom of the frame, 7-6, at Saint Louis on Thursday night.
With the setback, Richmond falls to 15-19-1 on the season overall and to 6-7 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the win, Saint Louis improves to 21-14 on the year and to 9-3 in league action.
Senior Cory Moheit had one of the best games of his career on Thursday night, going 3-for-4 with a home run, a double and four RBI. Freshman Kurtis Brown had a RBI double, while sophomore Doug Kraeger had a run-scoring single in the loss.
LHP Zak Sterling was solid in the start for the Spiders, pitching six innings while not factoring in the decision. The junior allowed four runs, just two earned, and struck out two. RHP Dan Martinson (1-1) took the loss for Richmond.
Richmond wasted little time getting on the scoreboard Thursday night, taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After a leadoff double from sophomore Tanner Stanley, senior Mike Small used a sacrifice bunt to move Stanley to third base. Kraeger followed, lining a single through the right side of the infield, easily scoring Stanley from third.
The early outburst was answered by the Billikens in the bottom of the second inning, when Saint Louis took advantage of a pair of Richmond errors to score two unearned runs.
After tacking on a run in the bottom of the fifth, the Spiders trailed SLU, 3-1, after six complete innings.
In the top of the seventh, the Spiders looked to answer. After an error, a walk and a sacrifice bunt, runners were on second and third base for Moheit with one out. On a 2-0 offering, Moheit hit his first career home run down the left field line – a three-run shot – to give the Spiders a 4-3 lead.
In a back-and-forth contest, Saint Louis scored once in the bottom of the seventh and then took the lead in the eighth with two runs to take a 6-4 advantage in to the ninth inning.
In the top of the frame, the rally started quickly. Sophomore Tyler Beckwith began the inning with a leadoff double and was plated on the very next pitch on a double from Brown.
After a sacrifice bunt from junior Ryan Cook, Moheit came through again for the Spiders, tying the game at 6-6 with a RBI infield single.
In the bottom of the ninth, Saint Louis' Danny Murphy hit a walk-off home run, winning the game for the Billikens, 7-6.
The Richmond Spiders will continue their three-game, A-10 series at Saint Louis Friday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST.
