Spiders Fall In Pitchers Duel At Saint Louis, 2-1

ST. LOUIS – The University of Richmond Spiders baseball team fell to the Saint Louis Billikens on the road Friday night, 2-1.
With its second-straight one-run loss to the Billikens, Richmond falls to 15-20-1 on the season overall and to 6-8 in Atlantic 10 conference play. With the win, Saint Louis improves to 22-14 on the year and to 10-3 in league action.
Despite pitching terrifically, LHP Dylan Stoops took the loss for the Spiders on Friday night. The junior pitched 7.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out seven batters.
Offensively, junior Ryan Cook and sophomore Tanner Stanley accounted for both of Richmond's hits in the setback.
After a scoreless first four innings, the Spiders finally broke through in the top of the fifth inning, taking advantage of a pair of Saint Louis errors. After Tyler Beckwith reached on an error from the Billikens' shortstop, the sophomore moved to third base after the SLU second baseman threw the ball away trying to retire him at second base on a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Kurtis Brown.
Cook followed, plating the run at the expense of two outs, as Beckwith crossed the plate on a double play. In the bottom of the frame, LF Nick Poulos cut down the potential game-tying run at home plate on great throw. After five complete innings, Richmond led at Saint Louis, 1-0.
Just like they did on Thursday night, the Billikens had an answer for the Spiders, scoring one run in both the seventh and eighth innings to take the game, 2-1.
The Richmond Spiders will wrap up their Atlantic 10 series with the Saint Louis Billikens on Saturday. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. EST.
