Final Men's Lacrosse Home Game Sunday
04/19/2014 | Men's Lacrosse
Richmond men's lacrosse finishes its inaugural home schedule on Easter Sunday with an Atlantic Sun Conference game against Jacksonville. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Robins Stadium. Admission is free and men's lacrosse is presented by Select Sector SPDRs.
The Spiders can qualify for the ASun Tournament in their first year of varsity lacrosse with any combination of a win and a Furman loss. Furman plays at Mercer, which has already qualified for the tournament, on Saturday night. The tournament will be held at the site of the number-one seed, on May 1 & 3.
The Spiders enter the day at 3-9 overall, 1-2 in ASun action. Richmond's three wins have come in the last seven contests.
Jacksonville is 3-7 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Sun. The Dolphins became Mercer's only loss in conference with a win at home over the Bears last weekend.
The Spiders have a pair of players with 20-plus goals this season, with freshman J.P. Forester (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) scoring in eight-straight games, the longest stretch for a Spider this season. He has averaged 2.0 goals per game in the last eight Richmond games to get to 22 goals scored this season.
The Spider defense has gotten stingier as the season has gone on, holding opponents to 10 or fewer goals in five of the last six games. Freshman goalie Benny Pugh (Powhatan, Va. / Woodberry Forest School) has a goals-against average of just 10.02 this season and has all three Richmond wins in 2014. Richmond is averaging 8.9 goals per game this season.
The Spiders are 2-4 in home games this season, which included the program's first win in Durham against Vermont on March 8.
The Dolphins have won their last two games following a three-game losing skid. Jacksonville put up 14 goals each on VMI and Mercer in the past two weekends. The Dolphins are averaging 8.8 goals per game this season. Opponents have scored in more than half (23 of 43) man-up opportunities this season, whereas the Spider defense is 27th in the country in man-down defense.
The Dolphins are led in scoring by sophomore Tom Moore, who has 19 goals.
Richmond will finish the regular season at VMI on Saturday, April 26th at 12 noon.
