04/27/2014 | Men's Golf
LUTZ, Fla. – Junior Danny Pizetoski became the first Spider to win the Atlantic 10 Men's Golf Championship and led Richmond to a second-place finish as a team, just one shot back.
The Spiders entered the final day three shots behind VCU and carded a 289 on Sunday, two shots better than the Rams. Richmond finished the 54-hole tournament with an 879, one shot behind VCU's 878. George Washington took third with a 904.
The Spiders had trailed by six shots after the first round and cut the gap to three after Saturday's second round. The second place finish matches the highest A-10 finish for Richmond. The Spiders also finished second in 2010.
Pizetoski shot a 1-under 70 in Sunday's final round, finishing the tournament at 2-under 211 to win by four shots over VCU's Rocky Khara. With the victory, Pizetoski earns a spot in the NCAA Regional Championships.
The Davidson, N.C. native became the first Spider to win three tournaments in the same school year and just the fourth Spider to win three career tourneys.
He becomes the first Spider to win a conference title since Steve Jamroz won the CAA Championship in 1995. Pizetoski is one of four Spiders to win conference titles, joining Jamroz, Rob Shawger (1990), Dave Renzulli (1988) and Rob Gai (1986, 1987). Current Spider assistant coach Nick Austin had tied for first in 2011, but was edged in a playoff.
Pizetoski, who carded a 1-under 70 in the first round and an even-par 71 in the second round, had won the season-opening Marshall Invitational in September and the Pinehurst Intercollegiate in March.
Richmond sophomore David Germann tied for third at 5-over 218. He shot a 1-over 72 on Sunday and had opened the tourney with a 2-under 69.
Spider senior Jack Wilkes finished eighth at 224, finishing his Richmond career with an even-par 71 on Sunday.
Junior Colin McDdae tied for 12th at 228 and sophomore John David Sanderson tied for 30th.
