
Four Spiders Earn All-Atlantic 10 WLAX Honors

Richmond senior Taylor Blazer (Berlin, Md.) was named the 2014 Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Year as the league announced its yearly women's lacrosse awards on Thursday afternoon. Blazer and junior attack Emily Doyle (Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J.) earned First-Team All-League honors, as voted on by the league's coaches.
Blazer is currently the conference leader in draw controls with 58, and is just seven shy of Richmond's career record. Blazer also leads the team and ranks third in the A-10 with 25 caused turnovers. Her 43 ground balls are tops on the team and third in the A-10. Blazer anchors a defense that allowed just fewer than seven goals per conference game.
Doyle leads the Spiders with 31 assists, six shy of the school mark and tying her personal single-season best. She sits fifth in school history in career assists and has also scored 28 goals, second-most on the team this season.
The Second-Team All-A10 squad also featured junior midfielder Anna Jeszeck (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.), who is second on the squad with 34 points (23 goals, 11 assists), adding 20 ground balls and eight caused turnovers.
The All-Freshman team included Spider Emily Castle (Annapolis, Md.), who scored 16 goals and three assists in her first collegiate season.
Jeszeck and Blazer were joined by Erin Marie Geoghan (Highland, Md.) on the Atlantic 10 All-Academic Team.
The Spiders finished 10-6, 5-2 in the league and in a three-way tie for second place in the standings. The Spiders earned the two-seed for the Atlantic 10 Championships, which take place in Robins Stadium at Richmond on Friday and Sunday. The Spiders face La Salle in the first semifinal Friday at 1 p.m. The winner takes on the winner of the 3:30 p.m. semifinal between top-seeded Massachusetts and Duquesne in the Championship on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Tickets are six dollars for a single day, $10 for a tournament pass. Children 16 and under get in for four dollars and a groups can buy three-dollar passes in advance by contacting the Spiders Ticket Office or the Atlantic 10. Students from Atlantic 10 member schools get in free with their school ID. All three games will be streamed on the Atlantic 10 Network, which is available at Atlantic10.com.
